I am almost there for this weeks Solid Gold Sunday show … two hour of 60’s and 70’s. Half way through the second hour I play several number one’s from a particular year ……. this week as we are in the 1970’s for the media story and top ten, I thought I would go for the 60’s. I have chose 1969. WOW! What a year. Unusually there are 20 songs that reached poll position with 8 of them only reaching number one for one week …. most unusual. We also have the longest spell at number one by a ban that didn’t actually exist … The Archies with Sugar Sugar. We then have a record that was banned because of it sexual overtones; Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg with Je T’Aime… Moi Non Plus (by todays standards it seems extremely tame, but back then it had everyone talking) There was another ultimate one hit wonder …. a number one where the group never have another chart entry whatsoever …. Zager & Evans and the most wonderfully titled In The Year 2525 (Exordium And Terminus. Marmalade made it twice to number one with the same song, with the Beatles track Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, which has the opening line:

Desmond has a barrow in the market place
Molly is the singer in a band
Desmond says to Molly “girl I like your face”
And Molly says this as she takes him by the hand

…. which is a direct reference to Desmond Dekker, who himself had a number one in 1969 with his backing group “The Aces”; the classic “Israelites”.

I have a very hard task to choose only 4/5 to include in the show. If you have any preference let me know. Once that is done, it will be job done other than the artist of the week, which to be honest is the easiest bit.
