Have you ever done a challenge for Charity? Run a 5k? Sat in a bath of baked beans? Had your chest waxed?
Well local Stafford window cleaner Mark Vaz is nearly at his halfway point of an absolutely MAMMOTH running challenge all to raise money for Tommy’s and Katherine House Hospice!
After Mark and his wife suffered from 6 miscarriages, Mark decided to do an epic challenge to raise awareness and vital funds for two charities close to his heart.
Mark told us in one of his many interviews here that he felt that to raise awareness he would need to do something big.
Miscarriages affect 1 in 4 people in the UK
Mark decided to run 90, yes 90! Marathons in 90 days!
A Marathon is 26.2 miles and Mark has been doing over this distance every day, making his efforts Ultra Marathons! Even more incredibly, he is doing this with NO rest days and is STILL doing his job as a window cleaner!
Anyone who has done just one marathon will tell you how hard it is. If they were that easy then everyone would be doing them right?
One downside to this challenge has meant that the large amount of media coverage has meant that a very small number of people have come out of the woodwork and made some negative comments to Mark about the challenge. One person even commented… ‘Running a few marathons aint all that’. Well we at the Sports Sandwich disagree.
Running a marathon is a real endurance activity and takes a lot of physical demands on your body along with the need for a positive mental attitude!
Diet is also key and Mark has been taking on nutrition advice from his physiotherapist.
That said, Mark’s aim is to raise £90,000 and today saw him complete Marathon number 43. Thursday is Mark’s half way point of the challenge and he has invited people to come together and run with him.
Infact, throughout the whole challenge Mark has invited people to help support the cause and run with him. Last night saw Mark running with Stafford Harriers and last Monday, Mark inspired beginners running group from the Chase Health Club as he ran alongside them and gave them hints and tips.
If this has touched you in anyway, feel free to do a cake sale at work or similar to support Mark. Please also share the facebook and twitter pages and write on his wall! The more support the better!
