On Saturday Stafford Rugby Club hosted 2nd in the table Telford Hornets at Castlefields in what turned out to be a tough and tight encounter. The weather was unkind, however despite this there was a strong and vocal crowd in attendance who were somewhat buoyed by the VP’s and honorary Life members.
For the first 40 minutes both teams were in deadlock with Stafford having to produce resolute defence to keep Telford away from the home try line. Unfortunately, late in the first half Telford went over in the corner and converted the try to take a 0-7 lead into half time. The second half was more profitable in terms of territory for Stafford, however not in points as Telford increased their lead to 0-14 with a last gasp try from a charged down Stafford defensive kick.
The Stafford 1st XV is the youngest team they have fielded for many years and as such, against bigger, older and more experienced teams in heavy conditions we are at a disadvantage, a disadvantage that narrows in every game played, they are confident that the Shrewsbury and Telford games have provided an education that will enable them to prevail in future games.
