Stone Masons were at work on the War Memorial in the grounds of the Holy Trinity Church in Eccleshall this last week.
A group of enthusiasts realised that there were men from the Eccleshall area who died during WW1 but were not named on the War Memorial. The research which was carried out identified 17 service men who fell into this group.
The addition of the names started last week. The lower part of the memorial was cleaned which made a huge difference to the clarity of the names and other words already carved on the memorial. The cross and the base of the memorial were not cleaned as the masons believed the lichens were now protecting the stone from degeneration due to the weather.
The memorial will be officially rededicated on Sunday June 24 starting at 10am.
